The Odisha Sahitya Akademi, established by the Odisha Government in 1957, with the aim to support and promote the Odia language, literature and culture. The objectives of the akademi include maintaining standards and integrity in Odia literature encouraging collaboration for event organization preserving the legacies of notable figures in the Odia language safeguarding manuscripts and actively participating in activities like compilation, editing, publishing and distribution. To broaden its reach and engage in project implementation the Akademi was officially registered under the Societies Act of 1860 with the registration number 5884/84 1970 71.
The Akademi is committed to advance Odia literature through initiatives that align with the principles and decisions set forth by its governing body. These initiatives include organizing events such as seminars and workshops for writers as well as hosting festivals focused on storytelling and poetry performances.
Additionally, the Akademi also grants several prestigious awards, such as the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award, which recognizes significant contributions to Odia literature, and the Atibadi Jagannath Das Award, honoring literary figures for their lifetime achievements. It also acknowledges writers with the Saraswat memento and organizes lectures during anniversaries and memorial events to pay tribute to influential personalities in Odia literature.
To publish Classical poetry, poems and other works of Sahitya poets & writers. Till date Akademi has been published. The following books are
To sponsor or organizes Sahitya literary conferences, seminars and exhibitions. Akademi is frequently organizing Seminars and literary conferences.
To improve and develop the Sahitya and other scripts in use in Odisha and to encourage translation & publication of selected books into Sahitya language. Akademi is always publishing translation of Odia literature into Sahitya.
To encourage writers & Poets & development of Sahitya language & literature Conferences/ Seminars/ Mushaira are being organized(Both State & National level). Akademi is frequently organizing National Musharias & National Seminars.
Orientation programme for Sahitya Teachers. Orientation programme is being organized regularly
Scholarships for Students with Sahitya Subject. Scholarship is being given to the students with Sahitya as MIL.
Essay competition of Sahitya students in College level and Award to them. Essay competition is being organized regularly
To establish Sahitya Learning Centres at different places of Odisha for the promotion of Sahitya language. Akademi has established learning centres to promote Sahitya language and literature.
To organize Qawwali Programme ( Both State & National level) Akademi is frequently organizing National level Qawwali every year.
To organize Ghazal Programme ( Both State & National level). Akademi is organizing National & State level Ghazal programmes frequently.
Akademi Awards for Sahitya Poets & writers have been given upto 2001 & 2022.
